Problems streaming video
Make sure you have the latest plug-in from Apple. Go to http://www.apple.com/quicktime/download/. You will need at least QuickTime 6.5 to view the streaming video.
Open the QuickTime Player. Go to the Edit menu and pull down to Preferences, then select QuickTime Preferences.
- Under the pull-down menu at top of the Quicktime Settings window, select Browser Plug-in. Make sure the first two items are checked.
- Now select Connection Speed from the top pull-down menu. Set it to whatever connection you might have.
- Next, select File Type Associations, select File Types... and make sure the "Streaming-Streaming movies" and "Video - Video only and video with audio file formats" boxes are checked.
- Next under the pull-down menu is Instant-On. Make sure the Enable Instant-On box is checked. Default for the slider is in the middle.
- The last one we'll change under the top pull-down menu is the Streaming Transport, probably the most important one. Normally this will be set to the first option "Use UDP, RTSP Port ID" and "554" should be checked. You may come back to this window later and try the Auto Configure button if these settings don't work, but normally it will. Streamed video will not pass through a firewall, unless your IT administrator allows it. If you are behind a firewall, you may have to select the "Use HTTP, Port ID" radio button instead. It will cause your QuickTime to download the movie instead of streaming it. This will also be the case if you are connecting from a cable modem at home that is split into two or more connections (or a single computer using a wireless router), which will also cause the same problems as a firewall for streaming video.
Also, Windows computers may have a firewall set internally. You can configure your firewall settings to allow your internet browser an incoming streaming connection.
Always consult your IT administrator before you attempt to change your firewall settings
- Non-Windows XP) Go to the Network Connections control panel, select your connection icon, then under Network Tasks select "Change settings of this connection". Then click the Advanced tab in the properties window. In the Advanced control panel, click the Exceptions tab. In the exceptions control panel ensure that the browser you are using is checked to allow incoming internet connections. You may also need to change the Streaming Transport settings back to UDP in the QuickTime preferences (see above).
